JI convinces PML-N and PTI representatives to hold talks

JI brings contentious national parties together to hold “indirect talks”

Femy Francis

On 16 April, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) emir Sirajul Haq proposed conducting an All-Parties Conference after Eid. PML-N forms a two-member panel of Ayaz Sadiq and Saad Rafique to hold indirect talks with PTI's three-member panel comprising Pervez Khattak, Mehmoodur Rashid, and Ejaz Chaudhry. This comes after the ongoing year-long political turmoil the country is facing, where the mediator Sirajul held talks separately with PM Shehbaz Sharif and Imran Khan to come to a resolution.

Additionally, PTI had been holding talks with all opposition parties who are not part of the ruling coalition to support matters of election, says Senator Ejaz Chaudhry. He iterated that PTI wants to rejoin parliament and Imran Khan wants to reclaim his position as the leader of the opposition party, with that they want to push for the timely conduction of elections.

The aim of the conference would be to reach a consensus on election dates. Where JI would propose the ruling coalition agree to hold the election before October and convince PTI to drop its demand to hold an election on 14 May and reach a middle ground. Sirajul Haq plans to contact PPP Asif Ali Zardari after Eid, who already formed a three-member body of Senator Yousuf Raza Gillani, Federal Minister for Commerce Syed Naveed Qamar and PM's Adviser Qamar Zaman Kaira for the same purpose.

Furthermore, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah issued a warning to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) against releasing PKR 21 billion in funding to ECP to hold the Punjab elections. He said: "Those carrying this payment could suffer a penalty of recovery and that they have to later arrange the recovery of Rs21bn all their lives." He went on to criticise the previous PTI regime for creating the crisis Pakistan is facing today. Regardless of the current turmoil, "conditions of common man would improve and the country will progress," said Sanaullah.
